A History of Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking first began in the 15th century when people compiled letters, recipes and passages into a book. These were individualised to people’s tastes and personalities and inspirations. The 16th century saw the development of the scrapbook to what is much like a yearbook. Acquaintances added their names, details, a short note and perhaps an illustration to the scrapbook creator. 1570 saw scrapbook embellishments of coloured plates depicting scenes such as carnivals and theatre. Friendship albums and yearbooks became popular amongst girls in the 18th and 19th century as they were able to express their opinions and a historical record of their lives.

The development of the camera in the 1880's by George Eastman revolutionised the art of Scrapbooking. Mass production of Cameras and the affordability allowed instant pictures which people could then in turn incorporate into their scrapbooks.

Modern day scrapbooking has developed into quite an art form with so many scrapbook embellishments available including; decorative paper, glitter, and text fonts.

The future of scrapbooking seems to lay in Digital Scrapbooking; this comes hand in hand with the availability of scanners, desktop publishing and printing options. People are now able to create their scrapbook layouts online and then print them out for pleasure.
